Bring Your Language to Life!!

With Diane Neubauer

How, what, and reasons for comprehension-based language teaching for languages that are more distant from English, with different writing systems (particularly Chinese but others welcome).

Experience Thai language
demonstrations to gain the student perspective.

    • Weekly planning from auditory comprehension development, into whole-class reading together, and then more independent reading activities that have worked well with Chinese.

    • Modeling and getting to try out auditory input and reading activities.

    • Language-specific concerns & questions -- let’s talk: pinyin, tones, character reading, handwriting, culture integration, and how to create reading materials.

    • Lower level and upper level differences.

    • Transitioning classes towards a more comprehension-based approach, including textbook issues and managing multiple preps.

    • Time for questions and to discuss & plan how you want to incorporate ideas into your class the following week.

Several debriefing times through the day to consider how to make new language comprehensible and engaging to the class.

  • Coffee and Morning Snacks Included
